What can you expect from kosher cruises?

One Trip Advisor user wrote about his experience back in August with one our kosher summer cruises. Keep reading if you're curious about how our kosher cruises compare to any ole regular cruise:

"I wanted to make a post with the kosher cruiser in mind. This was our first cruise and our first kosher cruise, but it was a different enough and fantastic enough experience that I felt I had to post about it. The cost is roughly double the cost of the same cruise, but we felt it was worth every penny.

We sailed on the Norwegian Pearl from Seattle to Alaska, August 14-21, 2011. Usually in a cruise or airplane situation, ordering kosher food means that you get airline food wrapped in foil - nothing to write home about. Kosherica had 300 people in their group, and rented out part of one of the dining rooms (the Indigo). The had five mashgiachs (kosher supervisors) working on board around the clock to make sure that all food was prepared in an kosher way (glatt kosher, pas yisroel, cholov yisroel, etc. etc.).

The variety of food was phenomenal, with breakfast and lunch as buffets and dinner with a menu and served by wait staff. There were several solid entrees available at every meal, and meals included items like lamb shawarma, beef ribs, sushi, and chocolate pecan pie. Of course on Shabbos (the Sabbath) we had cholent (stew) and kishke (stuffed sausage). These foods were as good as any kosher restaurant I have ever eaten at (ribs even as good as La Gondola in Los Angeles).

It was a "comedy cruise" theme, with Yisroel Campbell (had a hit off-Broadway show), who I thought was very funny, but I am not sure he was the right match for all of the crowd. Rabbi Moshe Bryski was the scholar in residence (Chabad of Conejo Valley, California), whom I also liked very much, and I believe that he was universally well-received.

For Glacier watching they had a separate viewing area, and a farewell barbecue for the group. There was daf yomi (daily Talmud study) and davening (daily prayers) and lectures from Rabbi Bryski nearly every day. The chevra (community / group) was mostly people from the greater NYC area, with the next largest groups being from Montreal and Florida.

This is obviously a niche - you need to really want kosher food and be willing to pay significantly for the difference. We found the service, organization, and quality at the top of our traveling experiences and would highly recommend it. I also have to hand it to Norwegian, as the staff was clearly well aware of the many rules and customs involved."

If you are particular about your hotel, you may need to pick your hotel before your destination or you might end up switching locations a couple of times. 1. Choosing a Date
Jewish weddings are generally prohibited on Shabbat and festivals--including Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Passover, Shavuot, and Sukkot--and the fast days Tisha B'Av, the 10th of Tevet, the 17th of Tammuz, the Fast of Gedaliah, and the Fast of Esther. Traditionally, Jewish weddings are not held during the counting of the omer between Passover and Shavuot, although customs differ as to whether that entire seven-week stretch or just part of it is a problem. Marrying during the three weeks between the 17th of Tammuz and Tisha B'Av is also prohibited in traditional Jewish practice. Because many of these dates fall during prime wedding season (spring-summer), it's important to check an accurate Jewish calendar (such as www.hebcal.com) before you select a date.

As an advertising sales manager for a prominent New York based weekly Newspaper I deal very frequently with different travel venues who wish to advertise their programs. In these last few years, given the struggling economy, while advertising as a whole has been on the up it seems that many of these travel companies have scaled back in the number of tours that they offer per season – that is with the exception of Kosherica.

Itinerary
Day 1-2, Monday – Tuesday: Home - Johannesburg - Blyde River Canyon

We meet our guide in Johannesburg from where we’ll board our coach for the drive to Mpumalanga Province, renowned for its amazing scenery and multitude of spectacular waterfalls. We’ll spend the night in the area.

Day 3, Wednesday Blyde River Canyon - Kruger National Park

After breakfast we'll depart to view some of the panoramic landscapes in the area: the Blyde River Canyon, God's Window, Bourke's Luck Potholes, and other astounding viewing areas where we will marvel at the endless African landscapes. We'll make a stop at Lone Creek Falls and at "Pilgrim's Rest" where South Africa's Gold Rush peaked. In the evening we'll make our way to our lodge in the Kruger National Park, the most famous game reserve in the world. Here we'll prepare for dinner and overnight in the game reserve.

Day 4, Thursday Kruger National Park
Africa

With early light we’ll undertake our main open-vehicle safari excursion in search of “the Big Five”: Elephant, Lion, Leopard, Rhino, Buffalo – as well as other wild game in the reserve.

Day 5, Friday Kruger National Park - Johannesburg

Today we depart Kruger National Park and head for Johannesburg – eGoli: City of Gold. The city, South Africa’s largest metropolis, has an active and vibrant Jewish community, many synagogues and kosher restaurants. Upon arrival we’ll tour some of the major Jewish landmarks, including the impressive holocaust memorial, and some of the synagogues. We’ll continue to our hotel to prepare for Shabbat.
Day 6, Shabbat Johannesburg

After Shabbat services and lunch we’ll take a walking tour of the area.
Day 7, Sunday Johannesburg – Victoria Falls
Africa

This morning we’ll make our way to Johannesburg International Airport for our flight to Victoria Falls, on the border between Zambia & Zimbabwe. In the evening we’ll take in a lively local folklore show describing African tribal life.
Day 8, Monday Victoria Falls – Cape Town

“The Smoke that Thunders” – is the African name for Victoria Falls. You can hear it roar and see the spray over the jungle, from a distance of 20 minutes drive away. Over a mile wide and 300 meters high, this is probably the single place in the world that can be truly described by the word: breathtaking!

With this spectacle in our minds, we’ll depart for our flight to another one of nature’s great beauties: Cape Town, Mother City of South Africa. Cape Town, situated in the south western corner of the African continent, was the first white colony on the continent. In the middle of the 17th century, the Dutch East India Company established there a service station for its ships traversing the continent on their way to the East, and the city grew from there. The city’s architecture is mixed: Dutch, British-Victorian and African, with Islamic elements that came with the arrival in Cape Town of Slaves from Malaysia.
Day 9, Tuesday Cape Town

South Africa is slowly becoming very famous for its magnificent wines. We’ll depart Cape Town this morning for a drive to the Cape’s Wine Route towns of Stellenbosch and Franschoek, where we’ll marvel at the indigenous Cape-Dutch architecture. From there we’ll travel to the own of Paarl where we’ll stop in at the Zandwyk Kosher Winery, for some wine tasting. In the afternoon we’ll take a boat ride to Robben Island, the infamous prison in which Nelson Mandela was held for over 26 years. After the visit we’ll make our way back to the city to visit the Cape Castle, the Gardens, Government Avenue which is home to the National Library and Archives, The Houses of Parliament, the President’s Residence, the South African Museum of Art and South Africa’s oldest Synagogue. We’ll visit South Africa’s world-renowned Jewish Museums complex, before we return to our hotel for dinner and overnight.
Day 10, Wednesday Cape of Good Hope
Africa

Today we’ll head out to the nature reserve at the Cape of Good Hope, which is within easy driving distance of the city. A wild, rocky coastline lies at the foot of the green vegetation-filled mountains of the Cape. The drive is breathtaking, and we’ll stop along the way and various lookout points, such as Chapman’s peak, Hout Bay, and others. The Cape of Good Hope is a must-see destination for anyone who as ever read books of ocean-going seafarers who discovered the main navigable sea routes that serve the marine world to this very day. At the tip of the Cape of Good Hope, is Cape point, meeting place of the Atlantic and Indian oceans. Our return to Cape Town will be via the penguin settlement at The Boulders; Simonstown, home to South Africa’s navy; and Muizenberg, once South Africa Jewry’s premier summer destination (which was nicknamed “Jewsenberg.”)
Day 11, Thursday Cape Town – Table Mountain

Today we’ll take the cable car to the top of famous Table Mountain for a magnificent view of the city and the Cape Peninsula. We’ll finish our shopping in Cape Town’s markets and then, in the afternoon, we’ll make our way to Cape Town International Airport, for our flight home.
Day 12, Friday Home

Welcome home & Shabbat Shalom. It’s time to rest up after this spectacular tour to the jewel in the crown of the African continent.

Air Travel
Passports will be required for any air travel from the Caribbean as of January 23, 2007. ALL persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling by air between the United States and Canada, Mexico and South America, the Caribbean and Bermuda will be required to present a valid passport.

Cruise Travel
As early as January 1st, 2008, subject to U.S. Government amendment, ALL persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling between the United States and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean and Bermuda may be required to present a valid passport or other documents as determined by the Department of Homeland Security.

Mediterranean and North Europe Cruises:
United States and Canadian citizens must have valid passports and necessary Visas. The expiration date of your passport must not occur within 6 months of the scheduled return date of travel. Naturalized U.S. citizens are advised to carry their naturalization papers. Aliens who are residents of the U.S. must carry their Alien Registration Card and passport. All others must have valid passports and necessary visas.

What clothing should I pack?
Most of the time, you'll feel comfortable in casual resort wear including light cotton clothing. Sweaters, lightweight jackets, raincoats and hats are also appropriate for Northern Europe. Tennis shoes or low-heeled walking shoes are recommended for exploring the ports of call. While most shore excursions do not have dress codes, some tours specifically prohibit shorts and sleeveless shirts, and require ladies to wear knee-length skirts or slacks.
There is usually two formal galas to which ladies will wish to wear long gowns or cocktail-length dresses; gentlemen may choose either tuxedos or dark suits. Number of formal nights may vary depending on cruise length and itinerary. On other evenings, resort attire is the norm.

What is the climate like?
Temperatures in Northern Europe and the Mediterranean (April through October) average 14 - 31 degrees Celsius; 57 - 88 degrees Fahrenheit. Of course, they may vary.
Temperatures in Caribbean: (November - April) average 72-85 degrees. Of course, they may vary.
Temperatures in South America: (December - March) average 71-84 degrees. Of course, they may vary.

Can I phone home?
Ship-to-shore telephone service is available 24 hours a day while the ship is at sea or in port from your stateroom. You'll find a telephone and dialing instructions in your stateroom.
If you need to be reached by people at home, have them call or fax the ship directly; or they can contact you via email through your own Internet Service Provider which you can then access via the Internet Cafe.

It’s all about fur.

Coats, to be precise.

Fur coats to keep out the chill of the brutal Russian winter.

That’s why there are Jews in Alaska.

In the early 1700s Russia’s population exploded. Its population of people, anyway. Its population of animals whose skins could be sewn into coats (and of course those famous Russian hats), declined. Severely. The Russians needed a new source of fur.

Explorers who had gone off to map the wildernesses at the far eastern edges of the Empire, had reported abundant populations of fur bearing animals there. Before long, adventurous capitalists who understood the laws of supply and demand went to work.

The Danish sea captain Vitus Bering, whose namesake Sea is about a thousand miles northwest of our present position, led the first Russian settlement expedition that established what would eventually become a permanent Russian presence in this far corner of North America. Jewish fur trappers were among his crew.

A little over a hundred years later the fur trade was enormous, increasingly international, and increasingly Jewish. Merchant companies, especially those whose dealings were on the territorial fringe of the Empire, were among the few commercial enterprises open to Jewish participation. One of the largest Alaskan fur ventures, the Russian-American Company, was managed throughout the 1850s by a man named Nikolai Rosenberg. But it wasn’t until 1885 that Jews settled permanently here. Robert Goldstein and his family set up a trading post in Juneau, and specialized in sable, beaver, and mink. Juneau's first mayor was Jewish, and the Goldstein Building, which still stands, was used for a time as the state's interim capital.

As the ninteenth century rolled along, Alaska’s own population began to explode. President Lincoln’s Secretary of State William Seward had purchased Alaska from the Czars in 1867. The price he paid -- $7.2 million, or less than 2 cents per acre -- was ridiculed in the continental US as a colossal waste of money, but the merchants of San Francisco, then the largest city in the American west, knew otherwise. Among them were many Jews who had toiled to build a thriving US trade with Russia, and who lobbied intensely for Seward to make the purchase. Their faith in the move was soon vindicated, as the succeeding decades saw discoveries of Alaska’s vast mineral wealth – mother lodes of gold, silver, copper, zinc, coal, and oil.

The Gold Rush was on.

Prospectors in search of their fortunes migrated north. 20,000 gold-rushers came to the Yukon in 1898 alone. Communities were born as tiny homesteads grew into villages, towns and cities. The institutions of civilized life came next – roads, schools, markets, places of worship. Dawson City, whose population today is just 1500, had 40,000 inhabitants in the early 1900s, making it the largest city in North America north of San Francisco. It was the site of the first significant Jewish institution in Alaska. Nearly 200 Jews had settled there. Thirty-six of them gathered for Rosh Hashanah in 1898, and celebrated the first organized Jewish worship in Alaska in the back of Charles Rosener’s General Store. Word spread around the territory, and soon the newly established Hebrew Congregation of Dawson had to rent the commodious Yukon Order of Pioneers Hall, in which they davened regularly. They founded a cemetery when a young Jewish prospector named Isaac Simons, who had come to Dawson all the way from New York, drowned, and his Alaskan fellow congregants honored him with a proper Jewish burial. That cemetery, Beit Chaiim, was restored and reconsecrated in 1998 as part of the ceremonies commemorating of the 100th anniversary of the Klondike Gold Rush.

Jews have made a disproportionately large contribution to Alaskan history, as they have to every society and culture in which they’ve lived. Those furriers who accompanied Bering on his famous expedition were second in their influence only to the prominent Jews who came here to profit from the Gold Rush. Lewis Gerstle, a Jewish San Francisco merchant, founded the Alaska Commercial Company, and became a major provider of groceries and general merchandise for trappers, explorers and gold seekers. His steamboat line plied the Yukon River, providing one of the only reliable routes into and out of the territory. His venture capital funds financed an enormous percentage of Alaskan mining. Gerstle’s village stores became centers of community activities, serving as post offices, community halls, courtrooms, marriage parlors, funeral homes, and safe havens for travelers, as well as banks which could extend credit to trappers, miners, and fishermen. Gerstle got a river named after him; J.B. Gottstein, another Jewish retail merchant, named his company after himself, and to this day Gottstein’s remain’s one of Alaska’s largest firms.

In 1901, the Jews of Nome, who built the shipping and retailing industries of that city, formed the first Jewish charitable organization in Alaska, the Nome Hebrew Benevolent Society. At around the same time, Nome also gained notoriety for being the location of an establishment called The Dexter, a saloon run by the legendary OK Corrall gunfighter Wyatt Earp. Mrs. Wyatt Earp was an apparently beautiful young lady by the name of Josephine Sarah Marcus. Her German-Jewish parents moved the family from Brooklyn to San Francisco when Josephine was a child, and in her teen years she met the dashing deputy U.S. Marshal who would steal her heart. After the OK Corrall, Josephine and Wyatt Earp led a peripatetic existence that took them to Idaho, remote northern California, and eventually, to Nome where they opened their saloon. Later they moved south to Colma, California, near San Diego, where they are both buried in a Jewish cemetery.

The Jewish community of Fairbanks was founded with the arrival of Lithuanian Jew Robert Bloom in 1904. Bloom ran a general store in town, and was a leader of the Fairbanks Jewish Community for nearly half a century. Earlier a member of the pioneering Hebrew Congregation of Dawson, he became the Yukon's first lay rabbi. He was also a member of an advisory group that helped establish the first US military base in Alaska, and he was a founder of what would later become the University of Alaska. Bloom’s wife, Jessie Spiro Bloom, met her husband while he was on holiday in Dublin. She left Ireland with her new husband in 1912 to settle in Fairbanks and soon became an active member of the community. A woman's suffrage advocate during her student years in London, she helped the women of Fairbanks organize to win the vote in 1913. Later, while raising four daughters, she established the first kindergarten in Fairbanks and the first Girl Scout troop in Alaska. Together, the Blooms were very active in conservation efforts, supporting the movement to set aside Alaskan land for wilderness preserves. The Blooms also served as unofficial chaplains for Jewish servicemen stationed in Alaska during World War II.

The war years saw one of the stranger episodes in the Alaskan Jewish saga. As the number of European Jewish refugees fleeing Nazi Germany neared crisis levels, a handful of American government officials, frustrated with the rigidity of the country’s strict immigration quotas, began to search for solutions. FDR’s Secretary of the Interior, Harold Ickes, and New York Congressman Charles Buckley, came up with an extraordinary one. They sought to allow a certain number of refugees to settle in sparsely-populated Alaska, then still a territory and not yet a State. Roosevelt resisted at first, as did many Americans, some on anti-Semitic grounds, and others opposed to any measure that would increase competition for scarce jobs by bringing foreign workers into the depressed U.S. economy. Alaskans also opposed the plan for a variety of reasons, from provincial xenophobia to worry about the cost of absorbing so many new citizens.

While America debated the issue, the leader of the Jewish community in the town of Neustadt, Germany wrote Washington in 1939 in an urgent application for immigration to Alaska. One day after his letter arrived at the Department of the Interior, Germany invaded Poland and World War II began. In March, 1940, Roosevelt answered the Neustadt letter, saying that the Alaska immigration plan was still being considered. And it was. Congress debated the proposal in May, 1940, and it collapsed in subcommittee, unable to attract sufficient votes for passage. The Jews of Neustadt perished in the Holocaust, but their letters petitioning Roosevelt remain in the National Archive, a testament to one of the darker moments of American Jewish history.

Alaska’s Jewish population waned as the war raged on, falling below 100 in 1940. The following year, Jewish military chaplains arrived to minister to soldiers stationed in the territory, becoming the first ordained rabbis to officiate here. After the war the GI Bill swelled Alaska’s population, and brought new Jews to the most remote towns and biggest cities. The first mayor of Anchorage was David Leopold, who was followed in that capacity some years later by another Jew, Zachary Loussac. Former territorial governor Ernest Gruening was elected one of Alaska's two senators when the territory gained statehood in 1959. In 1964, Jay A. Rabinowitz was named to the Alaska Supreme Court. Even some Alaskan mountains (Ripinski, Neuberger, and Applebaum) are named after Jewish pioneers.

Since 1970, the state’s Jewish population has grown steadily, fed mostly by Jews moving north from California, Oregon, and Washington. A 1995 survey, the most recent completed, counted a Jewish population of approximately 3,000 in the state, or about six-tenths of one percent of the state's population. But Chabad statistics indicate a presence of some 6,000 Jews, or approximately 1% of the total state's population. Eighty-one percent of Alaska's Jews live in its three largest cities -- Anchorage, Fairbanks and Juneau, and fully half of Alaska's Jews live in Anchorage.

Although one might assume that the remoteness of Alaska might foster a disinterest in Judaism, or that a Jewish life would be difficult to sustain here, statistics indicate that the Alaskan Jewish community is surprisingly robust. A recent study showed that fully 42 percent of Alaskan Jews belong to synagogues, compared with 27 percent in the continental US. Most of the Jews here are between the ages of 25 and 62, married, and highly educated. Some 53% of Alaskan Jews are women. The intermarriage rate in Alaska is high. Only 6% of Alaska's Jewish community was born here.

Anchorage boasts a Reform synagogue and a Chabad House, and Fairbanks has a lay-run Reform synagogue. Jewish cemeteries are now established in Anchorage and Fairbanks. Anchorage is also home to chapters of Hadassah and the Anti-Defamation League, and an active outreach program to Jewish communities in Siberia. Kosher food is available at supermarkets in Anchorage and Fairbanks, and in more remote locations, is shipped frozen from Seattle. In addition, the Anchorage Lubavitch rabbi maintains a mikvah. Alaska does not yet have a formal partnership with Israel; nevertheless, during the 1990s the state exported nearly $25 million in goods to Israel, which now ranks as Alaska's 35th leading trade partner.

Alaska’s state nick name is “The Last Frontier,” and as we’ll continue to discover this week, the name is apt, certainly from the point of view of American Jewry, at least. But its remoteness and isolation notwithstanding, the state’s beauty and natural bounty, not to mention the hardiness and determination of its inhabitants, justify another phrase often applied to this remarkable place. That phrase, the state’s official motto, may well have been on the lips of those first Jews leaving Russia in search of fur nearly three hundred years ago, and I leave you with it today: “North to the Future.”

Warm Up The Winter With Kosherica by Yochanan Gordon

Just a couple of weeks ago on a sunny Shabbos afternoon, I looked up at the sky and noticed a fleet of birds heading south. While at that moment in time I felt perfectly comfortable with the weather still in the high 60’s to the low 70’s, it seems that the birds begin to anticipate the frost of winter well before it actually arrives. Now, as we make our way into the month of November and then December, we will wake up day in and day out to a sheet of frost, perhaps even a little snow covering our car mirrors and windshields, at which point we wish that we could follow the seniors to their condos down south.

While most of us cannot get away for the entire winter season, for the week or so that we can, Kosherica is going to the Caribbean. In order to accommodate all of our disparate schedules, Kosherica is embarking on a total of five cruises, four of which leave on different dates, beginning with December 26 (which is nearly sold out), then on January 16, 2011, January 23, 2011 (one Norwegian and one with Celebrity Solstice), and finally an all new cruise on February 25, 2011.

The Kosherica family has been committed to excellence, setting new standards in both cruise and on-land getaways for over a decade and a half. Anyone who has traveled during that time with Kosherica is hard pressed to pinpoint exactly what about the overall experience they enjoyed most. Alan Dershowitz is an American lawyer, jurist, political commentator, and Mid East Analyst. He has spent most of his career atHarvard University, where at the age of 28, he became the youngest full professor of law in its history. He is the Felix Frankfurter Professor of Law at Harvard Law School. Dershowitz is known for his career as an attorney in several high profile cases and as a commentator on the Arab-Israeli conflict. Dershowitz is sure to shed some keen commentary and profound insights and most importantly, truth, behind this dizzying dispute. Also joining Dershowitz as a scholar in residence is Rabbi Levi Shemtov of Washington, DC. Rabbi Shemtov has acted as a liaison of sorts carrying Jewish awareness to the White House. He is responsible for the famous Chanukah menorah lighting on Capitol Hill every year.

In addition, the January 16 cruise is Kosherica’s all famous Jewish music festival at sea featuring the Jewish world’s most exciting entertainers such as Avraham Fried, Dudu Fisher, Lipa Schmeltzer, Cantors Chaim Adler, Ben Zion Miller, father and son Naftali and Netanel Hershtik, Yaakov Motzen, Yaakov Stark, and more. If you are an amateur singer looking to make inroads for yourself into the industry, the next “Kosherica Idol” competition is your opportunity to be heard by the most talented vocalists and musicians of our time.

Israeli Executive Chef Porat Raises the Bar on Kosher Cruises

Copenhagen…As the executive chef of the five-star Dan Acadia in Herzliya, Ariel (“Arik”) Porat is already considered one of Israel’s leading kosher chefs. But earlier this month, Arik brought his mastery aboard the new Costa Deliziosa in a cruise to the Baltics, sponsored by Kosherica, a leader in the growing popularity of kosher cruises that include resident scholars and world-class entertainment. For the more than 200 vacationers (out of 2160 passengers), the 7-day cruise was also a week-long culinary experience, as it has been on many of the Kosherica cruises that featured Arik. Each evening, passengers in the elegant third floor hall dined on a five-course meal that included several choices of beef, poultry, and fish, much like those served in some of the finest hotels and restaurants. For Helit Edelstein of Kosherica, the logistical challenges of having a world-class chef of Porat’s reputation “is all part of the experience,” which on this particular cruise included Rabbi Stephen Riskin of Efrat and Cantor Yaakov Motzen.

The “challenges” also included recruiting reputable kosher supervisors and, of course, acquiring the best meats, fish and other ingredients for the world-class chef. Ofi Fishman, Helit’s brother, and a key player in planning the menus, prides himself on the quality of the baked goods that is prepared on board as well as the quality natural and fresh ingredients. While their acclaimed culinary delights have become almost routine, they still are busy “educating” the ship’s staff and most importantly catering to the needs of a “very sophisticated clientele” that on this particular cruise came from as far away as Melbourne and from such places as Gibraltar, Tel Aviv, Montreal, Toronto, London, and New York. Kosher industry sources say that kosher cruising has increased by more than 20% in the past five years, despite the recession. While some travelers still prefer going on a cruise with the cruise ship providing “kosher airline-like meals,” the trend is towards joining the total kosher experience that companies like Kosherica offer. David Wallace of Eddie’s Travel, which partnered with Kosherica for the kosher cruises, sees a growing number of kosher travelers opting for organized kosher travel to many destinations throughout the world. He is already joining Kosherica for Sukkot programs at the Dan Caesarea and Hacienda Forest View hotels in Israel and for many winter cruises in the Caribbean. As the kosher passengers disembarked in Copenhagen after visits to Tallinn, Estonia, Helsinki, Finland, St. Petersburg, Russia and Stockholm, Sweden, the talk was about “the experience” which meant the Kosherica program and, of course, the food of Arik.

The cruise began in Bayonne, NJ and after a day and a half at sea, we pulled into a port of call in Portland, ME. From Portland we sailed through the night until early Tuesday morning, when we arrived in Bar Harbor, ME—home to Acadia National Park, one of the world’s most historic sites with opportunities for biking, hiking, or kayaking through nearly a hundred miles worth of terrain and breathtaking scenes. From Bar Harbor, we made our way to St John, New Brunswick—home to the Bay of Fundy which with its reverse rapids falls is one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Other tourist attractions include a Jewish museum datelining the history of the Jews in New Brunswick, containing actual artifacts and interesting history about their once vibrant Jewish community. Our last port of call was in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The streets were brimming with tourists and local summer traffic. Everyone came out for the annual buskers festival which featured a mini–merko loco (Spanish market) with various vendors displaying their wares for purchase while the passersby enjoyed live entertainment by various amateurs displaying their talent. We toured Halifax on Friday, after which we embarked over Shabbos back to NJ, reaching port on early Sunday morning from where we disembarked capping off a summer vacation that will be remembered for some time to come, or at least until the next cruise that we join.

The itinerary in and of itself would constitute a packed summer travel program. However, aside from the time spent touring the various cities along the way, the staff at Kosherica had prepared a full program including stimulating lectures by the Orthodox Union’s Steve Savitsky and Rabbi Steven Weil, who tackled very timely topics such as marriage and outreach as well as an interesting lecture from Rabbi Weil into the history of the Haftorah and various interesting traditions with regard to the daily setup of our prayers. In addition, there were daily concerts featuring the world renowned Cantors Yitzchak Meir Helfgot and Ben Zion Miller along with the world renowned accompanist Daniel Gildar, as well as fully orchestrated performances by Avraham Fried, Lipa Schmeltzer, and the famous Broadway star from Les Miserable, Israel’s very own Dudu Fisher.

Beyond all the luxury, amenities, and the pampered environment aboard the world class Celebrity Summit, there is one detail that was appreciated not only by my wife and myself but many others whom we spoke to during and after the weeklong excursion—the warmth and personal attention that was felt by the sold-out crowd thanks to the courtesy of the staff including Mr. and Mrs. Yehuda Shiffman, Aliza Klein, and Cheryl Gold.

Tips for Your Jewish Wedding / Bar Bat Mitzvah / Anniversary

1. Choosing a Date
Jewish weddings are generally prohibited on Shabbat and festivals--including Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Passover, Shavuot, and Sukkot--and the fast days Tisha B'Av, the 10th of Tevet, the 17th of Tammuz, the Fast of Gedaliah, and the Fast of Esther. Traditionally, Jewish weddings are not held during the counting of the omer between Passover and Shavuot, although customs differ as to whether that entire seven-week stretch or just part of it is a problem. Marrying during the three weeks between the 17th of Tammuz and Tisha B'Av is also prohibited in traditional Jewish practice. Because many of these dates fall during prime wedding season (spring-summer), it's important to check an accurate Jewish calendar (such as www.hebcal.com) before you select a date.

We recommend calling our agents and we can either have your wedding on an existing Glatt Kosher cruise or create a completely new cruises or venue depending on your requirements and wishes.

To be produced in cooperation with Kosherica, the leading organizer of kosher cruises since 1995, the 2010 line of offerings includes cruises headed for the Mediteranean, Alaska, the Baltics and Canada New England.

Each cruise will combine an exciting line-up of entertainers from the world of Jewish music with distinguished scholars in residence from Israel and the United States. The programs will be hosted on ultra-modern luxury cruise
